Calgary Sun Preview With Ryan Parker

Last year, Catalyst took the High Performance Rodeo by storm with its production of Frankenstein in a limited run at Theatre Calgary, which saw more people clamouring for tickets than were actually able to see it, making Nevermore one of the hottest tickets of this year’s festival.

“Nevermore is not an opera. There is dialogue which is spoken without music and some of the verse is spoken over music, but given that there is so much music, people view it as a musical. It certainly feels like a musical,” says Parker. “There is lots of movement that is not exactly dance, but there is also a great deal of dance in it because the entire world we create is very stylized, dark, gothic and surreal.”

Parker says the aim of Nevermore is to explore how and why Poe’s life inspired so much of his work. Scott Shpeley stars as Poe. The other six cast members play the show’s narrators, as well important people in his life and the demons in his life and his works.
